IVF Update – Male Fertility Suppliments. Scam or Not?

by Elle on June 26, 2012

I’ve been MIA for a little while. Mainly because I’ve had very little to report. The waiting game to start IVF has been long.

Oh, the irony

When BF and I first started trying to conceive, I’d go on forums and read about couples going through IVF and the thought of  IVF made me anxious. I’d literally say a little prayer that I’d never have to go through that.

How ironic that just a few months later, I’d be excited to start IVF and waiting would actually make me anxious.

So here’s the update

After countless rescheduling, BF finally gave a second semen sample. We’ve started with a new RE, so we’re starting the whole fertility testing all over again. I don’t mind going having another Sono and HSG and cycle monitoring again. I get more stressed out about BF having to give a second sample, simply because he hates doing it and dreads it more than I dread all the tests I go through.

The results from the second semen analysis are still not good. They’re more or less the same as they were the last time. They’re actually very, very slightly better, but not enough to make a difference.

So, it’s official yet again – our new RE has also confirmed that our only hope is IVF/ICSI.

Here’s the thing…

Although I pretty much knew that this was our only hope, I’ve heard BF gets his hopes really high that this sample might be so much better that we may be able to just forget IVF altogether.

It breaks my heart to have to break the news to him (for the second time). I know he was optimistic and hoping for the best.

Now’s here’s my question…

Our RE has suggested that BF try taking fertility supplements for about 2 – 3 months to try to improve the quality of his sperm. He says that although we could go straight to IVF now, he’d rather increase the chances of those high quality awesome swimmers so that we have a better chance of being successful the first time around.

So I bought the most expensive vitamins I’ve ever bought in my life from the clinic at $110! The RE admitted that they may or may not work, but it’s worth a chance and waiting two more months won’t make a huge difference . I hope it’s not a scam.

I’m cautious because I’ve never heard of supplements costing this much… but then again, I’ve also never dealt with infertility either. Advice?

Have any of you tried these supplements or anything like them? Have they made a difference at all?

The waiting game continues, but we’re closer now

The plan is to try these supplements to increase sperm quality and I’ll start birth control pills at the end of August (another irony – taking BCPs to get pregnant) and that will officially kick off the beginning of this IVF process.

I NEVER thought I’d be so excited!!

Anybody try fertility supplements? If so,did they help?
