Preparing for IVF And Why My Tweeps ROCK!

I’m still a few months away from actually doing IVF, but know I have to start preparing my body for it like YESTERDAY!

About 5 years ago, my doctor suggested prenatal vitamins because my iron levels were relatively low and he thought prenatals were more useful for me that your regular old multi-vitamins. So, I’ve already been taking prentals for years. I can’t tell you how many times friends or family who saw my prenatals thought I was pregnant. It’s kind of funny actually.

As excited as I am to go through IVF, I know it’s no joke. I want to prepare for it like I’m preparing for a marathon. I have some good habits and some habits that I need to kick to the curb. Here they are:

The Good:

  1. I’ve been taking prenatals and folic acid forever!
  2. I’m relatively gluten-free
  3. I’ve never been a soda or juice fan – I love water and drink a truck load a day

The Ugly:

  1. I loooooooove me a glass of wine or two with dinner (I know, I know this isn’t good).
  2. Over the last few months, I’ve gained a bit of weight (not much, just about 5 – 7 lbs because I’ve been getting lazy with my gym routine… the wine doesn’t help either).
  3. I have to have a cup of coffee in the morning or someone’s gonna get hurt.
  4. My sleep habits have sucked lately. Some nights I sleep 7 hours, some nights 3.

Verdict, the ugly is clearly longer than the good. Meaning that this chic needs to get her s*&^ together!

Unexpected Advice From My Tweeps

Besides just researching online, I wanted to ask my wonderful twitter crew what they did to prepare their bodies for IVF. There is nothing better than asking someone who’s done it.

On a side note, if you’re not on Twitter, get on it!  It’s not just people tweeting about their grocery list, there is a wealth of knowledge over there.

This was my tweet:

Help...need advice - for those who went through #IVF, how did you prepare your body in the months before?
Time To Be Mommy

Although they agreed about cutting out caffeine, smoking, wine, etc., the responses were overwhelming : Acupuncture

Color me ignorant, but I was surprised at how many of them said it.  I’d always been skeptical of acupuncture. A thought that I believed was practical was actually a bit ignorant. I spoke with a friend of mine who, although hasn’t undergone IVF, did pretty much every other fertility treatment, and she swears by acupuncture as well.

I think we’re onto something here…

Thinking back a few months ago, I remember my RE suggesting that I try acupuncture. I was reluctant because being self-employed, I don’t have benefits that cover this, but neither did my tweeps who replied to my question.

I did a bit more searching and online infertility forums, blogs and research all point to one thing being helpful – acupuncture.

So, here’s the game plan:

  1. Lose the 5 -7 lbs that are probably a result of my evening wine and big dinner habit
  2. Lose the relationship with wine – as much as I love it, a baby is far more important
  3. Try to slowly stop caffeine – headaches here I come! and…

I’m so getting on the acupuncture bus!  I’m a total convert. Thanks tweeps, you guys rock!!

Have you tried acupuncture? If so, did you find it helpful?
